What passing at Worksop costs

Expected cost of the test cycle for the average candidate at a 55.2% centre.

  • Expected attempts (1 ÷ pass rate)1.81
  • DVSA fees at £62 weekday£112
  • Retake lessons (0.81 × 7 hr × £34)£193
  • Test cycle at this centre£306
  • Against a national-average centre-£56
  • Extra queue time from retakes8.9 wk

Add the parts that do not change with the centre and the full bill from provisional to licence at East Midlands lesson rates is about £1,893: £34 provisional, £23 theory, 45 hours of tuition at £34 (£1,530) and the test cycle above. Full cost stack.

Reading the numbers

What 55.2% at Worksop actually means for your budget.

5,975 candidates took the car practical test at Worksop during 2025/26 and 3,296 of them passed, a pass rate of 55.2%. That is a mid-sized centre, ranked 106th of 308 on pass rate, and 8th of 20 inside East Midlands.

That is 5.1 percentage points above the 50.03% recorded across all 317 centres, and 4.4 points above the 50.8% East Midlands average. A centre in this band is usually working quieter road layouts with fewer forced lane decisions, not a softer marking standard: the DVSA marking sheet is national.

Turn 55.2% into money. One divided by the pass rate gives 1.81 expected attempts before a first pass, so the average candidate at Worksop pays the £62 weekday DVSA fee about 1.81 times, or £112. Add 0.81 expected retakes at 7 hours of extra tuition each, charged at the East Midlands rate of £34 an hour, and the extra lessons come to £193. The test cycle at Worksop is therefore about £306. Testing here therefore saves about £56 against a centre sitting on the 50.03% national average, because the higher pass rate buys back part of an attempt.

Waiting time at Worksop ran to a median 11 weeks between booking and test in July 2026, 0.9 weeks below the 11.9-week national median. Across 0.81 expected retakes that is roughly 8.9 weeks of extra queueing before a licence arrives. In the same month DVSA offered 2,946 standard slots inside the booking window here and 6.8% of them were still free to book.

First-timers do better than the headline suggests. Of 3,301 first attempts at Worksop, 1,854 passed, a rate of 56.2%, which is 1.0 points above the all-attempts figure. 127 of those first tests were passed with no driving faults recorded at all, 3.85% of them. The gap says the candidates arriving well prepared are getting through, and the all-attempts rate is being pulled down by repeat attempts.

Since 2021/22 the pass rate at Worksop has fallen by 4.8 points, from 60.0% to 55.2%. Test volume has grown over the same span, from 4,554 to 5,975 tests a year. On the cost model above, that shift alone is worth about £44 to the average candidate.

Male candidates passed at 57.1% and female candidates at 53.1%, a gap of 4.0 points across 3,118 and 2,857 tests. Automatic tests made up 20.0% of the workload and passed at 48.0%, 7.2 points below the manual-inclusive rate, worth knowing before paying the automatic lesson premium. Month to month the rate ran from 51.3% in March 2026 to 58.8% in August 2025, a 7.5-point swing that shows how little a single month proves.

None of the similarly sized centres in East Midlands runs more than five points ahead of Worksop on pass rate, so travelling elsewhere is unlikely to pay for itself once you add an unfamiliar route, the travel and the settling-in lessons. The cheaper lever here is preparation on the roads your instructor already knows.

Pass rate by age

A 17-year-old passes at 67.3% here. A 25-year-old passes at 48.6%.

DVSA publishes Worksop broken down by single year of age, and the two ends of that range behave like different centres. 1,325 tests were taken here by 17-year-olds and 67.3% of them passed; 142 were taken by 25-year-olds and 48.6% passed. That is a 18.7-point spread, 3.8 points wider than the 14.9 points separating the same two ages nationally.

Put that through the same arithmetic the rest of this page uses and the gap stops being academic. A 17-year-old at Worksop expects 1.49 attempts, £208 in fees and retake lessons. A 25-year-old expects 2.06 attempts and £379, £171 more on identical £62 fees and the same £34 East Midlands lesson rate. The only thing that moved was the pass rate.

17-year-olds here pass 3.8 points above the 63.6% that 17-year-olds manage nationally. Against East Midlands, where the same age passes 65.2%, they are 2.1 points ahead. Either way, budgeting a 17-year-old against this centre's all-ages 55.2% is pessimistic by 12.2 points.

DVSA withheld the counts for ages 16 and 24 at Worksop, which it does where a cell is small enough that publishing the numbers could identify candidates. For age 24 the agency still printed a pass rate; those rates appear in the table below exactly as published, and are used for nothing else on this page, because a percentage with no denominator cannot carry a cost estimate.

None of this says a 17-year-old drives better. DVSA counts who passed, not why. The most likely reading is course continuity: a candidate testing at 17 is usually mid-course with weekly lessons behind them, while an older first-timer more often books a test after a gap. That is a lever, not a birthday, and it is the one part of this page you can actually change.

What each age costs at Worksop, on the same arithmetic as the rest of this page.

Expected attempts is 1 ÷ the pass rate for that age, fees are £62 an attempt and retake lessons are 7 hours at the East Midlands rate of £34. Ages where DVSA withheld the counts are shown as withheld and are not priced: a rate the agency would not put a denominator against is not a rate to budget from.

The under-26 row is DVSA’s own block total from DRT122D and counts the withheld cells, so it will exceed the sum of the ages printed above it wherever a cell is withheld (here: ages 16 and 24). The all-ages row is DRT122A, the figure the rest of this page uses. Nothing on this table is estimated or back-filled.

Pass rates are DVSA’s. The pounds are ours, on the same fee and lesson rate the rest of this page uses, applied to each age’s published rate and nothing else. Age is not the cause: the DVSA figures describe who passed, not why, and a 17-year-old mid-course typically arrives with recent, continuous tuition behind them. The national age curve.

Source and provenance

Pass rates, test volumes, gender splits and waiting times on this page are published statistics from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), taken from Driving test and theory test data: cars, tables DRT122A (Car driving test pass rates by gender and month: test centres, updated 2026-06-25), DRT122C (Car driving test pass rates by first driving attempt and gender, including zero faults: test centres, updated 2026-06-25), DRT122D (Car driving test pass rates by age (17 to 25 year olds), year and test centre, updated 2026-06-25), DRT122E (Automatic car driving test pass rates by gender: test centres, updated 2026-06-25) and DRT122F (Car driving test waiting times and availability by driving test centre, updated 2026-08-12). Centre-level figures cover the April 2025 to March 2026 financial year; the national quarterly series runs to June 2026. Snapshot taken 2026-09-04.

Pass rates are DVSA published statistics reproduced under the Open Government Licence, not our assessment of any centre. Great Britain only; Northern Ireland tests are run separately by the DVA. DVSA cautions that centre figures below about 100 tests a year are not robust for comparison.

Age figures are single years of age from DRT122D and are reproduced exactly as published, withheld cells included. DVSA replaces the counts in small age cells with “..”, in most cases while still printing that cell’s pass rate; those cells are shown here as withheld and are excluded from every comparison, ranking and cost figure on this page. Nothing withheld is reconstructed from the block total.
