Halifax test centre: 45.0% pass rate, £412 to get through it.

Halifax is a mid-sized centre, putting 5,845 candidates through the car practical test in 2025/26. 2,629 passed, so the centre finished the year on 45.0% and 264th of 308 nationally, 27th of 29 within Yorkshire and The Humber.

That is 5.0 percentage points below the 50.03% national figure, and 5.5 points below the 50.5% average for Yorkshire and The Humber. Low pass rates cluster where test routes carry heavy traffic, multi-lane junctions and frequent bus lanes. The examiners are not stricter; the roads give a candidate more chances to make a serious fault.

Turn 45.0% into money. One divided by the pass rate gives 2.22 expected attempts before a first pass, so the average candidate at Halifax pays the £62 weekday DVSA fee about 2.22 times, or £138. Add 1.22 expected retakes at 7 hours of extra tuition each, charged at the Yorkshire & Humber rate of £32 an hour, and the extra lessons come to £274. The test cycle at Halifax is therefore about £412. Testing here therefore costs about £64 more than the same candidate would spend at a centre sitting on the 50.03% national average, purely because of the extra attempt the pass rate implies.

Waiting time at Halifax ran to a median 11.1 weeks between booking and test in July 2026, 0.8 weeks below the 11.9-week national median. Across 1.22 expected retakes that is roughly 13.6 weeks of extra queueing before a licence arrives. In the same month DVSA offered 2,023 standard slots inside the booking window here and 18.6% of them were still free to book.

The first-attempt picture is harder here than the headline. 2,670 candidates sat their first test at Halifax and 1,146 passed, 42.9%, which is 2.1 points below the all-attempts rate. 38 of those first tests were passed with no driving faults recorded at all, 1.42% of them. Budget for the second booking from the start rather than treating it as the exception.

Since 2021/22 the pass rate at Halifax has fallen by 0.6 points, from 45.6% to 45.0%. Test volume has grown over the same span, from 3,754 to 5,845 tests a year. On the cost model above, that shift alone is worth about £9 to the average candidate.

Male candidates passed at 48.4% and female candidates at 41.3%, a gap of 7.2 points across 3,033 and 2,812 tests. Automatic tests made up 21.6% of the workload and passed at 41.6%, 3.4 points below the manual-inclusive rate, worth knowing before paying the automatic lesson premium. Month to month the rate ran from 41.1% in September 2025 to 49.7% in March 2026, a 8.6-point swing that shows how little a single month proves.

Among centres of a similar size in Yorkshire and The Humber, Leeds (Colton Mill) runs 6.8 points higher at 51.8%. On the same arithmetic that is roughly £84 of expected difference. Before moving, price the switch: a new instructor or extra travel for route familiarity typically costs £60 to £120 plus two settling-in lessons, which eats most of a gap under about eight points.
