Across 11 centres, North East recorded 48.4% in April 2025 to March 2026, 1.6 percentage points below the 50.03% figure for Great Britain, which ranks it 10 of 11 DVSA regions. That is 77,123 tests and 37,335 passes.
The regional average hides the choice that actually matters. Alnwick finished the year on 55.5% from 1,282 tests, Gateshead on 37.5% from 9,512. On the expected-attempts model the first implies 1.80 attempts and £274 of fees and retake lessons, the second 2.67 attempts and £503. The 18.0-point spread is therefore a £229 decision.
Waiting time varies as widely as the pass rate. Berwick-On-Tweed showed a median 20.3 weeks between booking and test in the latest DVSA reading, against 7.1 weeks at Gateshead. The regional median is 14.3 weeks, and the national median across all 317 centres is 11.9. Queue length is the part of a fail that a cost table misses: each retake pushes the licence back by roughly the local median, with insurance and lesson top-ups running through it.
Darlington is the busiest centre in North East at 12,183 tests, passing 47.1%. Lesson rates across North East run £26 to £32 an hour for manual tuition, which is what turns a percentage point of pass rate into a pound figure: at £29 an hour, each extra expected attempt costs £265 in fee and follow-up lessons.
