What passing at Banbury costs

Expected cost of the test cycle for the average candidate at a 41.3% centre.

  • Expected attempts (1 ÷ pass rate)2.42
  • DVSA fees at £62 weekday£150
  • Retake lessons (1.42 × 7 hr × £38)£379
  • Test cycle at this centre£529

Add the parts that do not change with the centre and the full bill from provisional to licence at South East lesson rates is about £2,296: £34 provisional, £23 theory, 45 hours of tuition at £38 (£1,710) and the test cycle above. Full cost stack.

Reading the numbers

What 41.3% at Banbury actually means for your budget.

9,069 candidates took the car practical test at Banbury during 2025/26 and 3,741 of them passed, a pass rate of 41.3%. That is a high-volume centre, ranked 289th of 308 on pass rate, and 32nd of 32 inside South East.

That is 8.8 percentage points below the 50.03% national figure, and 11.9 points below the 53.2% average for South East. Low pass rates cluster where test routes carry heavy traffic, multi-lane junctions and frequent bus lanes. The examiners are not stricter; the roads give a candidate more chances to make a serious fault.

Turn 41.3% into money. One divided by the pass rate gives 2.42 expected attempts before a first pass, so the average candidate at Banbury pays the £62 weekday DVSA fee about 2.42 times, or £150. Add 1.42 expected retakes at 7 hours of extra tuition each, charged at the South East rate of £38 an hour, and the extra lessons come to £379. The test cycle at Banbury is therefore about £529. Testing here therefore costs about £139 more than the same candidate would spend at a centre sitting on the 50.03% national average, purely because of the extra attempt the pass rate implies.

The queue is the expensive part at Banbury. DVSA recorded a median wait of 18.1 weeks between booking and taking a test in July 2026, 6.2 weeks longer than the 11.9-week median across all centres. Multiply that by the 1.42 expected retakes and a candidate here is looking at roughly 25.8 extra weeks of waiting, close to 6 months of insurance, lesson top-ups and a licence still not in the post. In the same month DVSA offered 1,912 standard slots inside the booking window here and 0.5% of them were still free to book.

The first-attempt picture is harder here than the headline. 4,308 candidates sat their first test at Banbury and 1,706 passed, 39.6%, which is 1.6 points below the all-attempts rate. 98 of those first tests were passed with no driving faults recorded at all, 2.27% of them. Budget for the second booking from the start rather than treating it as the exception.

Since 2021/22 the pass rate at Banbury has fallen by 4.8 points, from 46.0% to 41.3%. Test volume has grown over the same span, from 6,265 to 9,069 tests a year. On the cost model above, that shift alone is worth about £82 to the average candidate.

Male and female candidates are within a point of each other at Banbury, 40.8% against 41.7%. Automatic tests made up 25.9% of the workload and passed at 35.9%, 5.4 points below the manual-inclusive rate, worth knowing before paying the automatic lesson premium. Month to month the rate ran from 37.0% in May 2025 to 46.2% in January 2026, a 9.2-point swing that shows how little a single month proves.

Among centres of a similar size in South East, Chertsey (London) runs 11.6 points higher at 52.9%. On the same arithmetic that is roughly £175 of expected difference. Before moving, price the switch: a new instructor or extra travel for route familiarity typically costs £60 to £120 plus two settling-in lessons, which eats most of a gap under about eight points.

Pass rate by age

A 17-year-old passes at 51.3% here. A 25-year-old passes at 40.2%.

Split Banbury by age and the headline 41.3% comes apart. 17-year-olds passed 51.3% across 1,771 tests. 25-year-olds passed 40.2% across 254. That is 11.1 points, against 14.9 points between the same two ages across Great Britain.

Put that through the same arithmetic the rest of this page uses and the gap stops being academic. A 17-year-old at Banbury expects 1.95 attempts, £374 in fees and retake lessons. A 25-year-old expects 2.49 attempts and £551, £177 more on identical £62 fees and the same £38 South East lesson rate. The only thing that moved was the pass rate.

17-year-olds here pass 12.3 points below the 63.6% that 17-year-olds manage nationally. Against South East, where the same age passes 64.6%, they are 13.3 points behind. Either way, budgeting a 17-year-old against this centre's all-ages 41.3% is pessimistic by 10.0 points.

Banbury is large enough that DVSA published every age cell from 17 to 25 with its counts intact, which is true of 187 of the 307 centre pages here. Nothing in the table above is withheld, rounded up from a small base or filled in by us.

Treat the age column as a description, not a cause. DVSA records the age of the candidate and the result, nothing about preparation. The pattern is consistent with recent continuous tuition rather than with youth itself, which matters because tuition is something you control and your age on test day is not.

What each age costs at Banbury, on the same arithmetic as the rest of this page.

Expected attempts is 1 ÷ the pass rate for that age, fees are £62 an attempt and retake lessons are 7 hours at the South East rate of £38. Ages where DVSA withheld the counts are shown as withheld and are not priced: a rate the agency would not put a denominator against is not a rate to budget from.

The under-26 row is DVSA’s own block total from DRT122D and counts the withheld cells, so it will exceed the sum of the ages printed above it wherever a cell is withheld. The all-ages row is DRT122A, the figure the rest of this page uses. Nothing on this table is estimated or back-filled.

Pass rates are DVSA’s. The pounds are ours, on the same fee and lesson rate the rest of this page uses, applied to each age’s published rate and nothing else. Age is not the cause: the DVSA figures describe who passed, not why, and a 17-year-old mid-course typically arrives with recent, continuous tuition behind them. The national age curve.

Source and provenance

Pass rates, test volumes, gender splits and waiting times on this page are published statistics from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), taken from Driving test and theory test data: cars, tables DRT122A (Car driving test pass rates by gender and month: test centres, updated 2026-06-25), DRT122C (Car driving test pass rates by first driving attempt and gender, including zero faults: test centres, updated 2026-06-25), DRT122D (Car driving test pass rates by age (17 to 25 year olds), year and test centre, updated 2026-06-25), DRT122E (Automatic car driving test pass rates by gender: test centres, updated 2026-06-25) and DRT122F (Car driving test waiting times and availability by driving test centre, updated 2026-08-12). Centre-level figures cover the April 2025 to March 2026 financial year; the national quarterly series runs to June 2026. Snapshot taken 2026-09-04.

Pass rates are DVSA published statistics reproduced under the Open Government Licence, not our assessment of any centre. Great Britain only; Northern Ireland tests are run separately by the DVA. DVSA cautions that centre figures below about 100 tests a year are not robust for comparison.

Age figures are single years of age from DRT122D and are reproduced exactly as published, withheld cells included. DVSA replaces the counts in small age cells with “..”, in most cases while still printing that cell’s pass rate; those cells are shown here as withheld and are excluded from every comparison, ranking and cost figure on this page. Nothing withheld is reconstructed from the block total.
